The Science Behind the Practice: Yoga for Stress Management
Feb 22, 1:30pm - 3:30pm (Saturday)
House of Flow
147 Prince St #208, Brooklyn
When we experience stress, it can lead to physiological changes within the body that over time can impact our mental and physical health. If stressors can lead to these negative effects, what can we do to intervene? The power of pranayama, yoga and meditation can be harnessed to better manage how we respond to stressors we encounter.
What is this workshop:
We will discuss the physiological systems that are activated in response to certain stressors (e.g., the sympathetic or “flight/flight” response, the stress hormone cortisol), and how over time these could lead to negative effects on mental and physical health. We will cover how the benefits of yoga extend “off the mat” to influence how we respond to stress, and the physiological pathways through which this may occur. We’ll also discuss the restorative practice of sleep – how stressors can lead to sleep issues, and how mindful practices can help us improve our sleep. Throughout, we will practice techniques (e.g., pranayama, restorative yoga) to facilitate quieting of the stress-responsive systems. Students will leave empowered with both knowledge and practices to help better manage everyday and chronic stressors.
What to expect:
Dr. Sally Dickerson is a yoga teacher (RYT-500) and a psychology professor; her research and teaching focus how stress affects physiology and health. In this workshop, she will guide students through the basics behind the science and practice of stress reduction. Accessible information on how and when the body responds to stressful circumstances will be interspersed with opportunities to practice evidence-based strategies to help better manage the stressors we experience.
Support survivors of domestic & sexual violence. We are using the practices of yoga to uplift these communities.
